What motivates you to work out and live a healthy lifestyle?
I get this question a lot and it’s always the most difficult to answer. There have been so many motivating factors in my weight loss journey and honestly my motivation changes as I progress in this journey. What started in 2014 as an aesthetic journey to visually please my ex-husband (*rolls eyes*), shifted to a spiritual journey that helped heal my mental.
I started my journey in 2014. My first transformation, when I lost about 50 pounds took about 5 months. After the first transformation I relapsed when I went through a divorce and gained it all back! My second transformation is still a work in progress however; I am down 30 pounds and becoming stronger than I’ve ever been (mentally and physically).
What does your workout routine look like?
When I started this journey in 2014 I did a lot of cardio to get the excess weight off. My regimen was 1 hour walking/jogging on the treadmill 3 times a week. Now, I incorporate a healthy balance of cardio and weight training. In a typical week I do about 2 to 3 hours of cardio a week and 1 to 2 hours of weight training a week.
What do you eat in a typical day to stay in shape?
A typical day begins with breakfast, two boiled eggs on a rice cake with hummus. Lunch is usually salmon, tuna steak, or shrimp with veggies and brown rice. Dinner is typically light, consisting of a seafood protein and veggies (no starch for dinner). I snack on raw unsalted nuts, baked chips, fresh fruits, coconut ice cream and other various healthy options between meals. I’ve maintained a pescatarian diet since 2017. I only meat from the sea. No land meat.
How do you maintain your hair while working out?
I have locs so these really no hassle when it comes to maintaining my hair. I wash my hair two to three times a month and most of the time let it air dry. I retwist my locs about once a month.
What’s in your gym bag?
3 essentials that I always keep in my gym bag:
Water
Bluetooth headphones
Weight lifting gloves
I absolutely can not workout without my three essentials.
What might we catch you doing outside the gym?
When I’m not at the gym I’m either working my federal job or being a full time single mom of one 5 year old daughter.
Give your best 3 health tips that people can implement right now.
Increase activity level even if it’s just walking 30 minutes a day.
Drink half of your body weight in ounces of water per day (ie. 200 lbs divided by 2 = 100 ounces of water daily).
Decrease sodium intake.
These three changes helped me drop excess weight pretty quickly initially.
